Interpol removes Mehul Choksi from ‘wanted’ list

Efforts to bring fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi to India suffered a major setback on Monday. Interpol has removed the red notice against Mehul Choksi. Interpol has withdrawn its red notice against Mehul Choksi in the $2 billion Punjab National Bank fraud case on the basis of the diamond merchant’s representation. A red notice was added against Choksi in December 2018.

However, the Government of India has strongly opposed this move of Interpol. India is very angry over the removal of Mehul Choksi’s name from the wanted list by Interpol. For this he has strongly opposed.

This move of Interpol backfired on the efforts of the two central agencies. There is a setback for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The removal of the red notice means Mehul Choksi can travel outside Antigua and Barbuda.

India protested strongly, saying that if his red notice was removed, he might flee to Antigua. A second official said that the removal of the Interpol red notice would not affect our investigation or efforts to extradite us to Antigua.

Earlier, the problems of fugitive Mehul Choksi had increased further. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered a fresh FIR against the fugitive and Gitanjali Ratna Nakshatra Brands in the Rs 55.27 crore fraud case. Mehul is currently in Antigua. Mehul, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, has defrauded Punjab National Bank of more than Rs 14,000 crore.

In the first case Mehul Choksi, his firm Nakshatra Brands Ltd defrauded banks to the tune of Rs 807.2 crore. His nephew Nirav Modi also used to support him in the fraud. Punjab National Bank had lodged a complaint in this matter on 21 March 2022. PNB had a loss of Rs 13,500 crore in 2018. And in the second case, the total fraud amount is 5564.5 crores.
