Iran US War: The European Union (EU) has designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization with effect from January 28, 2026. EU attributed its decision to the Iranian regime’s brutal crackdown and atrocities against domestic protestors.

The EU has frozen the assets of IRGC across its 27 member states. It has also banned dealing of EU members with IRGC personnel. The decision seems largely influenced by the role of IRGC in drone strikes on Red Sea shipments and its support for Hezbollah amid Israel’s Gaza operations.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell remarked the IRGC is a terror network that disguises itself as one instead of a conventional army. Iran that is already struggling against sanctions imposed by the United States now faces further isolation. This could potentially spike the prices of global crude to $100 a barrel. Militarily, the terror organization tag on IRGC empowers Interpol to issues red notices on IRGC commanders like Hossein Salami.
Iran’s Reply to EU
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s Finance Minister Abbas Araghchi blasted the EU and labelled it as hypocritical. Araghchi remarked the EU decision is “political” and “illegal”.
The defiance of Iran underscores its hybrid warfare playbook that includes proxy militias, cyber ops and ballistic missiles.
Washington Issues Stark Warning To Iran
US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth remarked during a Cabinet Meeting that the pursuit of Tehran for nuclear weapons is an unacceptable red line. He also pointed to the recent capture of Nicolas Maduro, the former President of Venezuela, and his wife. Hegseth remarked no other country in the world could have successfully executed such a powerful and sophisticated raid.
Citing capabilities against Iran, Operation Midnight Hammer was cited by Hegseth when the nuclear infrastructure of Iran was targeted by Washington. Hegseth signalled that USA is ready to escalate things, if required.
