Kalpana Chawla Father: Banarasi Lal Chawla, the father of India's pioneering female astronaut and aerospace engineer, the late Kalpana Chawla, has passed away at the age of 90 after a brief illness. He was admitted to Karnal's Amritdhara hospital and succumbed to his ailment on Tuesday morning, according to family members. As per his final wishes, his body will be donated to Karnal's Kalpana Chawla Medical College.
Highlight On Kalpana Chawla Career
Kalpana Chawla, who was born and raised in Karnal, achieved numerous milestones in her career. She became the first Indian-born woman and the second Indian ever to travel to space. She completed her schooling at Tagore Bal-Niketan School in Karnal in 1976 and pursued a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in 1982. She later moved to the United States, earning a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and completing her PhD at the University of Colorado in 1988.
Tragically, Kalpana Chawla lost her life at the age of 41 on February 1, 2003, along with six others as the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas during its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar expressed his condolences, highlighting Mr. Banarasi Lal Chawla's role in nurturing his daughter's dreams and achievements, which made India proud and served as an inspiration to many.
