Man Dies After Getting Sucked Into MRI Machine, Check Why ? Precautions You Must Take to Avoid MRI Accidents

A heartbreaking MRI accident that happened in a medical facility in Westbury, New York, has taken the life of 61-year-old Keith McAllister, and this serves as a reminder why it is beyond doubt that safety measures must be adhered to strictly within the MRI room.

What Happened?

On Wednesday, July 17, there was a gruesome MRI accident at Nassau Open MRI with Keith McAllister forcefully drawn into a scurrying MRI machine. His wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, had requested a technician to take her husband to the scan room to assist her in getting off the MRI table. To his surprise, in the room, there was a 20-pound weight training chain with a lock around his neck, which McAllister had entered the room wearing unknowingly. The strong magnetic force of the MRI machine responded to the metal in a matter of seconds, as the machine pulled McAllister towards it violently. He had a medical episode on the spot, later diagnosed as several heart attacks, and the subsequent day, following the incident, he died of his wounds.

Why It Matters: Understanding the Risks of MRI Machines

This type of accident during an MRI is not unheard of, although rare. MRI machines are powerful magnets that help produce fine images internally. Metallic things can be turned into deadly projectiles due to their magnetic properties.

MRI Accident: Rare But Not Impossible

MRI accidents are rare, but when they do occur, they are often caused by exposure to metal in the MRI area. Recently, in the last few years, injuries related to the MRI have included oxygen tanks, wheelchairs, and even tools being dragged into the machines.

MRI Safety Precautions to Prevent Accidents

  • Remove all metal objects, such as necklaces, chains, jewellery, and belts, before entering the MRI room.

  • Never implement rules imposed by MRI technicians and medical personnel.

  • Inform the doctor of any metal implants or devices in your body.

  • One should never go into the MRI room without being screened or duly permitted.
