Use our thorough guide to help you navigate the challenges of obtaining permanent residency in Australia in 2024.

Migration to Australia: Australia is prepared to introduce the Pacific Engagement visa (PEV), a new permanent resident visa programme, in 2024. The initiative, which primarily targets citizens of participating Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste, has the full support of the Australian government.

Annual Allocation and Eligibility Criteria

Beginning in 2024, the Subclass 192 – Pacific Engagement visa will provide up to 3000 permanent slots per year for nationals of the aforementioned Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste, as well as their immediate family members. This programme, which is an expansion of Australia’s current permanent migration policy, is anticipated to help the country’s Pacific diaspora expand.

Immigration Legislation Approval

On October 19, 2023, the Australian government passed immigration legislation to help with the PEV’s implementation. The law permits candidates for the new immigration programme to be chosen through a voting process. The purpose of implementing the ballot method is to guarantee that all qualified citizens of Timor-Leste and Pacific Island nations, irrespective of their backgrounds, gender, or skill level, have an equal chance to apply for a permanent visa to Australia.

Eligibility Criteria for PEV Applicants

In order to be eligible for the PEV, a candidate must be chosen at random via the PEV ballot, be between the ages of 18 and 45, have a formal work offer in Australia, and fulfil additional conditions related to visa eligibility, such as character references, health tests, and English language ability.

Benefits for PEV Owners

PEV owners will benefit from a number of programmes, such as Medicare and government-funded education at public schools and universities. Additionally, on November 14, 2023, the Social Services and Other Legislation Amendment (Australia’s Engagement in the Pacific) Bill 2023 was passed by the Australian Parliament, granting eligible PEV holders instant access to social services like the VET Student Loans (VSL) programme, the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP), the Youth Allowance (student and apprentice), and the Family Tax Benefit.
