Senior scientist Nallathamby Kalaiselvi has been appointed as the Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). With this, she has become the first woman in the country to reach this high position. She will take over the post in place of Shekhar Mande.
Shekhar Mande retired in April. After him Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology was given additional charge of CSIR. Now Nallathambi Kalaiseelvi will work in this post. Along with this, she has also been given the additional charge of Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
Who is Nallathamby Kalaiselvi ?
Nallathambi Kalaiseelvi is known in the world of science for her amazing work in the field of Lithium Ion Battery. She is currently the director of CSIR’s Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI) in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu.
Kalaiseelvi made her special place during the last several years while working in CSIR. In February 2019, she also became the first woman to head the CECRI. She started her career as an entry level scientist in CSIR. CSIR is a consortium of 38 research institutes across the country. The appointment of Nallathambi Kalaiseelvi to the post of its Director General is for a period of two years.
Kalaiseelvi was born in a small town in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu. She took her early education from Tamil school.
Today she has obtained more than 125 research papers and six patents in a career spanning 25 years. Her special work has been focused on the development of electrochemical power systems, especially electrodes.
