Nitish Kumar: Awadesh Narain Singh, the chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council, has remarked that the resignation of Nitish Kumar, the longest-serving Chief Minister of the state, has saddened the state.
Nitish Kumar-Resignation From Legislative Council
Nitish resigned from the Bihar’s legislative council today after he secured a berth in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian Parliament). This marked a quiet but consequential transition in the politics of Bihar.
In a post on X, Nitish thanked the people of Bihar for their overwhelming support and trust for more than 20 years.
DON'T MISS
The 75-year-old Nitish who was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a record 10th term in November last year would now serve the Rajya Sabha. His transition to the Parliament’s Upper House would open door for the Bharatiya Janata Party to appoint its own CM for the first time ever.
Bihar’s Education Minister Sunil Kumar commented that the people of Bihar and the party members, no one wanted him to leave at this time. Sunil added there can be no other Nitish Kumar.
Will JD (U) Fall Down Like A Pack Of Cards Now?
The question of whether Janata Dal (United) would fall like a pack of cards may be a reality anytime soon. For years, JD (U) has been closely identified with the leadership of Nitish. His political persona that was built on coalition manoeuvring, governance and social engineering has functioned as the central pillar of the party.
Leadership uncertainty and vacuum of powerful alternatives to Nitish could trigger internal factionalism and weaken voter confidence. The party may face gradual erosion in voter base instead of a sudden collapse if the second-rung leadership fails to consolidate authority or articulate a clear vision. Over time, electoral setbacks, loss of narrative control or defections could cumulatively diminish its standing over time.
