Noted cartoonist Padma shri awardee Narayan Debnath passes away

Noted cartoonist Padma shri Narayan Debnath passes away on Tuesday. Debnath was 97 year old and was ill for a long time. He had created many Bengali comic characters.

Veteran Debnath was undergoing treatment at Bellevue Hospital in Kolkata. Cartoonist Debnath was the author of Bengali comic characters ‘Bantul the Great’, ‘Handa-Bhonda’ and ‘Nonte Fonte’. Debnath was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Bellevue Hospital sources said that Padma Shri awardee Debnath breathed his last at around 10.15 am on Tuesday. He was admitted to a private hospital on December 24 and was on life support.

Narendra Modi tweeted ”Shri Narayan Debnath Ji brightened several lives through his works, cartoons and illustrations. His works reflected his intellectual prowess. The characters he created will remain eternally popular. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condoled the death of Debnath. She said, “It is very sad that Narayan Debnath, the eminent litterateur, painter, cartoonist and creator of some immortal characters for the children’s world, is no more. He made cartoons like Bantul the Great, Handa-Bonda, Nonte-Fonte, which have been etched in our hearts for decades.’
