Odisha: Mangoes worth Rs 2.5 lakh/kg stolen after owner posts video on social media

Odisha: Mangoes worth Rs 2.5 lakhs per kilogram were stolen from a farm in Odisha’s Nuapada district after the owner shared photos of the fruit on social media. Laxminarayan, cultivates over 38 varieties of mangoes on his farm and upon realizing exceptional value of his fruit decided to share this news with the world. After only one day of posting the photos, four pieces of valuable fruit were stolen from his farm leaving Laxminarayan and local community in shock. Concerns have now been raised over security of agricultural produce and its possible impact on the local economy.

Miracle of Miyazaki mangoes

The ‘King of Fruits’ has popular renowned varieties from Dashari to Langda to Malda to Alphonso hailing from different regions of India. The most expensive of the fruit is native to Miyazaki city in Japan. It is priced around Rs 2.75 lakh per kg in the international market and was recently displayed at the seventh edition of Siliguri’s three-day-long Mango Festival. The mango is not only famous for its wonderful taste but has a long shelf life and is less likely to be eaten by pests. Chandra Satyanarayan a farmer of Nilathara village of Bargarh district in Odisha has been growing Miyazaki mangoes after learning it from a friend. He then proceeded to import mangoes saplings from Bangladesh and started growing the variety. The produce is being done for experimental purposes and the yielded crop has been termed satisfactory for 2nd year by the farmer.

India’s Mango export

In the fiscal year 2022-23, the value of India’s mango export stood around US $3 billion. United Arab Emirates (UAE) for last several years has been the biggest importer of Indian grown mangoes. India’s exports of Alphonso, Kesar and Banganpalli mangoes to the United States has more than doubled in April-June cycle compared to same timeframe last year. The normalization of airline freight costs has led to spike in Mango exports to US and UK. India is the world’s largest producer of mangoes, followed by China. However. India exports less than 1% of its produce because air freights are expensive and lack of sea ndia is the world’s largest producer of mangoes, followed by China. However, it exports less than 1% mainly because of lack of sea container protocol. In 2022-23, the United Arab Emirates (46%), United Kingdom, US (9%), Qatar (8%) and Kuwait (6%), had 84% share in India’s value of mango exports.
