The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in collaboration with the Punjab government, has launched a crackdown on unauthorised travel agents amid rising concerns over fraudulent practices targeting the state’s youth. This comes in response to the increasing number of young individuals falling victim to unscrupulous agents promising overseas opportunities.
In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sant Balbir Singh raised a query about fraudulent activities by unauthorised recruitment agents. The MEA acknowledged its awareness of such operations across the country, including Punjab, noting that many agents function illegally, violating provisions of the Emigration Act, 1983.
The ministry is working closely with Punjab authorities to curb these unlawful practices and protect vulnerable individuals. Officials are intensifying efforts to identify and shut down unauthorised agencies while promoting public awareness about the risks of engaging with illegal agents.
Punjab, with its large population of youth aspiring to work or study abroad, has become a hotspot for fraudulent schemes. The lack of regulation and oversight has enabled these illegal agents to exploit gullible individuals, often leading to financial losses and legal troubles for victims.
The joint initiative by the MEA and the Punjab government aims to enforce stricter compliance with emigration laws and ensure that aspiring migrants are not duped. The crackdown is part of broader efforts to bring transparency and accountability to the recruitment sector.
