A 30-year-old professor at the Indian Institute of Science recently fell prey to a QR code fraud. On August 11, the professor tried to sell his washing machine on a website. A possible buyer promptly got in touch with him and offered to buy the property for the listed amount without haggling. The buyer then emailed the professor a QR code, instructing him to scan it to have the money sent right into his bank account. But as soon as he did, Rs. 63000 were immediately taken from his account.
QR Code scams: How it works?
In a QR code scam, con artists create a fake QR code that seems to be a real payment code so they may trick unsuspecting victims into scanning it with their smartphones. Malware that steals the victim’s financial and personal information is installed by the code. At this point, the online criminal can easily utilise it to empty the victim’s account.
