Ravivar Vrath Katha: Sundays, the day named after the life-giving Sun itself, hold a special significance in Hindu Dharma. It’s a day dedicated to Surya Dev, the radiant deity who nourishes all life with his warmth and light. Devotees across the land observe various traditions to honor this cosmic source of energy, and one such practice is the recitation of the Ravivar Vrath Katha.

In ancient times, there lived an old woman in a city. Her rule was that every Sunday she would prepare food in the house and courtyard by smearing it with cow dung and would eat it only after offering it to the Sun God. By observing such a fast his house was filled with many types of wealth and grains. By the grace of Shri Hari, there was no disturbance or sorrow in the house. There was joy in every way in the house. In this way, after a few days, one of her neighbours, whose cow dung the old lady used to bring, started thinking that this old lady always brings my cow dung. So she started tying her cow inside the house. The old woman could not clean her house on Sunday due to lack of cow dung. Therefore, he neither prepared food nor offered it to God and he also did not eat food himself. In this way he observed a fast. It was night and she went to sleep hungry.
At night God gave him a dream and asked him the reason for not preparing and serving food. When the old woman told the reason for not getting cow dung, God said, Mother, we give you such a cow which fulfills all your wishes. Because you always prepare food smeared with cow dung on Sunday and offer it to me and then eat it yourself. I am happy with this and give you a boon. By giving wealth to the poor and sons to barren women, I remove the sorrows and give salvation in the last moments. After giving such a boon in the dream, God disappeared and when the old woman opened her eyes, she saw that a very beautiful cow and calf were tied in the courtyard. She was very happy to see the cow and the calf and tied them outside the house and put fodder there to eat.
When her neighbour’s old lady saw a very beautiful cow and calf outside the house, her heart burned with hatred and she saw that the cow had dung gold, so she took the dung of that cow and replaced it with the dung of her own cow. Kept it. She kept doing this every day and did not let the simple old lady know about it. Then the omnipresent God thought that the old woman was being cheated by the actions of her cunning neighbor, so in the evening God created a very strong storm with his magic. The old woman tied her cow inside due to fear of the storm. In the morning, when the old woman saw that the cow had given golden dung, her surprise knew no bounds and she started tying the cow inside the house every day.
On the other hand, the neighbor saw that the old lady had started tying the cow inside the house and her attempt to pick up the golden dung was not working, so she got jealous and jealous and seeing no solution, the neighbor went to the meeting of the king of that country and said, Maharaj An old lady in my neighborhood has a cow which is worthy of kings like you, it gives golden dung daily. You feed the people with that gold. What will that old woman do with so much gold?
Hearing this, the king ordered his messengers to bring the cow from the old woman’s house. The old woman was about to eat food offered to God in the morning when the king’s servants untied the cow and took it away. The old woman cried and screamed a lot but what could anyone say in front of the employees. That day, the old woman could not eat food due to the separation from the cow and kept crying throughout the night and praying to God to get the cow back. On the other hand, the king was very happy to see the cow, but as soon as he woke up in the morning, the entire palace appeared to be filled with dung.
The king got scared seeing this. God said to the king in his dream at night, O king. It is better for you to return the old cow. Pleased with his Sunday fast, I gave him a cow. As soon as the morning came, the king called the old woman and returned the cow and calf with respect along with a lot of money. Called her neighbor and gave her appropriate punishment. After doing this, the dirt was removed from the king’s palace. From the same day, the king ordered the townspeople to observe a fast on Sunday to fulfill all the wishes of the kingdom and their own. By fasting, the people of the city started living a happy life. There was no disease or wrath of nature on that city. All the people started living happily.
Ravivar Vrat Katha Rules
For those practicing Sunday fasts, it is recommended to observe at least 12 fasts a year. After offering water to the Sun and chanting Lord Surya’s Beej Mantra, the devotee should read the story of the Sunday fast. Wearing red clothes, offering water to the rising sun, and consuming wheat-based food with jaggery are part of the ritual. Upon fulfilling the fast’s resolution, it is customary to show respect by feeding Brahmins and making donations and dakshina related to the Sun.
