Passport Verification: Passport applicants will no longer need to go to police stations for verification, according to a memo released on Tuesday by DGP Shamsher Singh, law and order. The initiative aims to make the Passport verification process more user-friendly and citizen-friendly. Police stations are instructed by the circular not to call applicants for confirmation.
Background Check Responsibility Shifts to Police Officers
Police officers will now be in charge of checking the applicant's background and making sure there is no criminal record. Police officers will only visit applicants' homes if there are specific grounds to believe that they are engaging in fraudulent or unlawful activity, according to the new guidelines. For passport applicants, verification will be done remotely in all other cases to ensure efficiency and convenience.
Anticipated Efficiency Boost
It is anticipated that this modification will drastically cut down on the time and work required for passport applications. Concerns about the high percentage of passport rejections brought on by applicants' absence from their homes during verification visits served as the impetus for this decision. Sources told TOI that the circular was released following the DGP's receipt of complaints from applicants regarding corruption and needless hardship.
