S4S Technologies: A large portion of rural India’s population makes their living from smallholder farming. However, before it leaves the farms, some 30% of agricultural produce is squandered annually. This is because farmers are frequently forced to leave unsellable crops to rot in the fields due to bumper crops and price volatility.
Challenges in Agriculture
These lost crops consume the limited resources—energy and water—needed to develop them, need more resources to dispose of them, and hurt small farmers’ bottom lines. All of these factors contribute to rural poverty and inequality. Nidhi Pant, Vaibhav Tidke, Swapnil Kokte, Ganesh Bhere, Shital Somani, Tushar Gaware, and Ashwin Pawade, six friends from university, founded S4S Technologies in 2013. The organisation works to reduce food waste, gender inequality, and rural poverty by assisting smallholder female farmers in preserving and marketing excess produce.
Affordable Solar Powered Conduction Dryers
The company gives rural communities access to less expensive solar-powered conduction dryers and food processing equipment so they can process their crops locally instead of relying on more costly commercial food preservation techniques like cold storage.
Focused on assisting women farmers, S4S also helps its businesses turn saved trash into lucrative food products like ketchup that can be produced and sold. By connecting commercial purchasers with these items and giving the farmers who made them the majority of the revenues, S4S establishes a market.
Solar Food Processing
A startup company called S4S Technologies is situated in Mumbai and employs solar food processing equipment to turn agricultural output into durable goods. For instance, they turn tomatoes into sun-dried tomatoes and onions into dried onions.
Produce may be kept fresh for up to a year without the need for chemicals thanks to S4S’s solar dryers, which also retain over 90% of the nutrients. 20% or more of a harvest’s lower-quality produce is usually used by the company for drying. The remaining amount is given to S4S’s channel partners.
