3

As the Monsoon Session of Parliament commences on July 21, it is set to be one of the most turbulent sessions in memory. The opposition INDIA bloc is preparing to challenge the BJP-central government over a range of high-profile issues, including:

  • The Pahalgam terror attack and all that followed from Operation Sindoor.

  • Donald Trump\’s alleged initiation of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

  • The controversial revision of Bihar’s voter list has wiped out over 35 lakh names.

Pahalgam Attack: More Questions than Answers

Opposition leaders are uniting behind accountability for the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 security personnel. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari condemned the government\’s refusal to name those responsible and wanted answers on intelligence failures. “Terrorists behind the attack are still enjoying their freedom,” he remarked, while also calling Operation Sindoor an “unreliable military mission” and criticizing the lack of disclosure involved.

Trump’s Ceasefire Boast Sparks Row

Adding fuel to the fire, former U.S. president Donald Trump has been saying this week that he claims to have successfully mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after the attack. The INDIA bloc wants Prime Minister Modi to clarify publicly whether outside intervention happened in India\’s sovereign economic and humanitarian work.

Bihar Voter list: Backdoor NRC?

At the same time, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter rolls in Bihar has become a political hot potato. With lakhs of voters untraceable, the opposition claims the government is undertaking a backdoor NRC (National Register of Citizens) to rig voter lists for future elections. Abhishek Banerjee (TMC) (Trinamool Congress party) said ‘It is an attempt on the part of the government to delete existing genuine voters.

What will be the response of the BJP?

Senior leaders from the BJP, such as Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and J.P. Nadda, have met to finalise a counter-strategy to the opposition. They argue that the motivation behind the revision of the voter list has been to remove “ghost voters” for the forthcoming Lok Sabha and that Operation Sindoor bears the hallmark of strong, decisive leadership on national security matters.
