Tribal rights activists Stan Swamy dies

Tribal rights activist Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case, has died. Swamy’s counsel on Monday apprised the Bombay High Court about his client’s demise after the court considered his plea for bail.

Earlier today, advocate Mihir Desai had said that Swamy’s condition remained critical, the lawyer said that 84 Stan remained on ventilator support till late Sunday night.

It may be noted that on January 1, 2018, a program of people of the Dalit community was held in Bhima Koregaon, Pune. The event was organized by the Elgar Parishad, during which violence erupted in the program.

Many vehicles were torched by the mob and shops and houses were vandalized during this period. One person was killed and many were injured in this violence. Several people were arrested in this case for having links with the Maoists, one of them was Stan Swamy.

Swami’s condition was critical
Swami was undergoing treatment at Holy Family Hospital since the court’s order on May 28, his colleagues and friends were bearing the cost of his treatment in a private hospital. On Saturday, advocate Desai told the bench that Swamy’s condition remained critical And he is still in ICU. Also last week, Swamy had filed a fresh petition in the High Court challenging Section 43D(5) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
