Keralam Assembly Elections 2026: Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor has expressed optimism that the United Democratic Front (UDF) would win the Keralam assembly elections 2026 outrightly. Speculations have now started if V D Satheesan, the present leader of the opposition, would become the state’s chief minister. Interestingly, V D Satheesan has the support of ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

Much of the UDF’s optimism is rooted in the perception of strong anti-incumbency against the LDF. After two consecutive terms, the Vijayan government faces fatigue, governance criticisms and allegations of corruption.

Exit polls released on the eve of counting suggest that the opposition alliance may indeed be poised to end the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) decade-long rule under Pinarayi Vijayan.

Would Satheesan Emerge As The CM Face?

At the centre of the leadership debate is VD Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition since 2021. Over the past five years, Satheesan has crafted an image as an aggressive critic of the Vijayan government, focusing on corruption allegations, governance failures, and economic issues.

His interventions such as the recent attack on the government over power procurement decisions have kept him in the headlines and reinforced his credentials as a combative opposition leader in the state of Keralam.

The IUML by publicly supporting Satheesan is trying to pre-empt post-election uncertainty by nudging the Congress toward a leadership decision that aligns with its own preferences.  Furthermore, it aims to consolidate minority votes by projecting a leader who has actively engaged with these communities. Also, the party is trying to send a signal of cohesion within the UDF at a time when the LDF has been trying to portray the opposition as fragmented.

The IUML’s push for Satheesan introduces an element of clarity that the Congress has often lacked. If managed carefully, it could serve as a unifying plot around which the UDF consolidates its campaign.
