Shreyas Hareesh: A very dark day in Indian sporting history as we just lost a bright star. Shreyas Hareesh, a 13-year-old bike racing prodigy who became the first Indian to reach World Championship final recently, lost his life on the track.
Hareesh suffered a horrific crash in the National Motorcycle Racing Championship at Irungattukottai, Chennai, earlier today. Madras Motor Sports Club has canceled all the races remaining for the day.
The news hit hard as Shreyas was one of the most promising bike racers in the world. He was destined to go to the top of the world if you look at his performance. And in that regard, this loss is even more saddening.
A Promising Young Talent
Just last year, Shreyas became the first racer to win FIM MiniGP World Series India in its inaugural season. He was popularly known as ‘The Bengaluru Kid.’ He made history in May earlier this year when he reached the final World Championship in Spain.
He earned his big debut in 2021 when he made his INMRC debut. The age restriction was reduced from 13 years to 11 years specifically for him. Shreyas Hareesh became the youngest ever Indian to compete and win championships.
INMRC Crash
Harish was racing in the TVS Rookie class championship in the INMRC. Hareesh was in pole position, and the crash occurred soon after the start of the race. The organizers have released an official statement regarding the crash.
According to the report, Hareesh fell from the bike while exiting Turn 1, and his helmet fell off. Another rider behind Shreyas could not stop his bike, and Shreyas suffered a horrific head injury. He was rushed to the nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
