Aus Vs Eng Ashes 2023: It was supposed to be a record-breaking match for Nathan Lyon. Rather an ill-timed surgery might see him ruled out of the series. This is not only devastating news for Nathan Lyon but also very disastrous news for Australia as well.
The Aussies are not without their best spinner in the second test and maybe for the whole Aus Vs Eng Ashes 2023 series. This will prove detrimental to Australia's chances in this series and prevent Nathan Lyon from touching a milestone.
This was Lyon's consecutive 100th test match. A feat achieved by only 5 players before him, and none of them were bowlers.
Aus Vs Eng Ashes 2023: A Horrific Injury
When he injured his calf, Lyon was chasing the ball toward the Grand Stand boundary. He got up but was limping and soon after was assisted toward the dressing room. This injury will be heartbreaking for Lyon as he reaches the 500-wicket milestone.
Before the match, Lyon had 495 wickets and needed just 5 wickets to achieve the milestone. He got the wicket of Ben Duckett and was just 4 wickets shy from the milestone. And then the injury happened, and dreams were squashed.
Lyon will come back as soon as possible and will achieve the milestone. He is that good of a bowler. But considering the injury, he might have to wait more for the milestone.
Todd Murphy Ashes Debut
Steve Smith confirmed before the start of the third day that Lyon's injury was not looking good. He also acknowledged that losing Lyon would be detrimental, considering his importance to Australia's success.
He has not ruled out the comeback of Lyon in this series, but he is not completely confident either. As Smith carefully hinted towards the Ashes debut of Todd Murphy.
“However, Todd Murphy is waiting in the wings. He has been bowling beautifully in the nets and bowled well in India when he got his opportunity. So I’d be confident if he came in, he’d do a terrific job for us, but fingers crossed Nathan’s all right.” Smith stated.
