Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023: Controversy has erupted in regards to the Indian pitch curators and their supposed effort to "manipulate" the playing field prior to the Nagpur Test, with multiple Australian selectors and cricket experts weighing in. The Australians are concerned that the Indian pitches are not impartial and give an advantage to the home team.

Criticism on pitch for Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023

The pictures of the pitch have caused outrage among the Australian cricket community and it is clear that the pitch has been left dry in the area outside the off-stump for left-handers and has only been rolled in the center. Former Australian cricketer Simon O'Donnell has called for the ICC to step in and guarantee a neutral playing field without any favoritism. He took a jab at the Indian curators, noting that the ICC doesn't seem to consider it necessary to address India on the issue.

The dry area in the center of the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium has very little grass, while the surface has been watered outside of the full-length areas for left-handed batters at each end. Five of the likely top seven Australian players - Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, and Alex Carey - bat left-handed.

Robert Craddock, a prominent cricket commentator, remarked on SEN WA Breakfast, "It’s a multi-toned pitch. The classic saying about pitches is, ‘Oh, it’s the same for everyone." Craddock continued by openly accusing the curators of the Nagpur pitch of attempting to use malicious techniques to give the Indian team an unfair advantage.

He continued further by saying, "When the Gabba pitch had too much grass was left on it, people were saying, ‘Yes, it was not a great wicket, but it was the same everyone. But you can’t say that about this pitch, Australia has six left-handers in their top eight, so if you start multi-preparing parts of the deck that’s straight-up pitch doctoring, it’s poor."
