Manipur Violence: On Thursday, boxing legend MC Mary Kom pleaded with the Centre to do something to stop the unrest in Manipur. To maintain order in the northeastern state where fighting broke out during a tribal revolt on Wednesday, the Army and Assam Rifles were sent in.

Boxer Mary Kom Twiited some pictures of burning Manipur and wrote, "My state Manipur is burning, kindly help." She also tagged PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh with some news channels. The violence started on Wednesday during a "Tribal Solidarity March" organised by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Churachandpur district's Torbung area to protest the non-tribal Meiteis' quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation, which dominates the Imphal Valley. According to a senior police officer, thousands of protesters participated in the event, which saw conflicts between tribal and non-tribal members and later expanded to neighbouring districts.

Flag marches are being held to maintain control over the situation
An army spokesperson claimed that when the Army and Assam Rifles were sent in throughout the night, they worked with the state police to put an end to the violence by dawn. He said that more individuals are being relocated to safer locations. So far, 4,000 people have been rescued and given refuge by the troops from the violence-hit districts, he said. Flag marches are being held to maintain control over the situation, he said.
Manipur-bound trains cancelled by Indian Railways
All Manipur-bound trains have been cancelled by Indian Railways' North East Frontier division due to the state of the law and order in the northeastern state. The movement of trains in the state would be halted till the situation has improved, according to report. The NF Railway's action follows the government's recommendation to cancel all trains going to Manipur. Indian Railways further stated that 4 trains had been cancelled, with the first decision being made for May 5 and 6. As a preemptive step, the Manipur state administration had previously also announced the suspension of internet access. In order to stop the violence from spreading throughout the state, the authorities also issued a "shoot at sight" order. In order to stop the violence in Manipur between the tribal people and the Meitei population, the government has currently sent in the Army.
