England’s iconic victory

Prior to December 2023, the last time England won a Test Series against Pakistan in Pakistan was during their inaugural official tour in 1961-62. The November-December 2000 tour of Pakistan by the English team was considered a “boring series” as the first two matches in Lahore and Faisalabad ended in draws.

The final Test took place at Karachi’s National Stadium, where Moin Khan, the captain of the home side, won the toss and chose to bat first. Pakistan performed impressively, posting a total of 405 runs in 139.4 overs. Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammed Yousuf stood out with exceptional centuries, scoring 142 and 117 runs respectively. Among the visiting team’s bowlers, left-arm spinner Ashley Giles was the standout performer, claiming four wickets for 94 runs.

In England’s first innings, opener Mike Atherton played a resilient innings, scoring 125 runs off 430 balls against the bowling of Waqar Younis and Saqlain Mushtaq. With this contribution, England reached a total of 388 runs. Waqar Younis, the experienced fast bowler, excelled by taking four wickets for 88 runs, granting his team a 17-run lead for the second innings.

England chases target in dark

In the second innings, Pakistan started well but ended day four at 71 for 3. The match appeared to be heading towards a draw, but a twist unfolded on the final day. Pakistan had taken an 88-run lead but collapsed for 158 runs, with Saleem Elahi top-scoring with 37 runs.

Darren Gough and Ashley Giles played crucial roles in Pakistan’s collapse, each taking three wickets. On the final day of the test match, England successfully chased down the target of 176 runs within 44 overs. Despite Moin Khan’s hopes for the subcontinent winter sun to set and the game to end in a draw, Umpire Steve Buckner was unwilling to halt the match. In a memorable moment, Graham Thorpe wore night vision glasses and scored 64 runs off 98 balls, leading his team to victory under darkening conditions.

The match concluded at 5:55 PM local time in Pakistan, with an empty stadium and the sun nearly set. It marked Pakistan’s fourth consecutive defeat on home soil.
