Why the crowd at Eden Gardens lost calm

With India’s potent batting lineup, led by the famous Sachin Tendulkar, up against Sri Lanka’s fearsome bowling attack, the match was predicted to be an exciting one. The crowd in Kolkata was giddy with excitement and expectation as they eagerly anticipated seeing their team advance to the final. However, what unfolded on the field that day was anything but a fair contest.

After a promising start, India’s batting order collapsed, and from 98/2, they slumped to a dismal 120/8. The supporters, who had been enthusiastically supporting their team, were left disappointed and disgruntled. Some of them resorted to despicable acts of violence, hurling bottles onto the field and setting the stands on fire.

The match referee, Clive Lloyd, had no option but to take the players off the field and suspend play. After several attempts to restart the game failed, Lloyd awarded the match to Sri Lanka by default.

The aftermath of the match was a stark reminder that the true spirit of sport lies in the principles of sportsmanship and fair play. The images of the burning stand and the tear-stained face of Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, who was seen crying as he made his way back to the dressing room, will forever remain etched in the memories of cricket fans around the world.
