Warne’s ball of the century

Warne had an impressive career total of 708 wickets in Test cricket. While his accomplishments offer a glimpse of his cricketing excellence, the legendary “ball of the century” he bowled to England’s Mike Gatting on June 4, 1993, finest exemplifies his extraordinary ball-handling ability.

When Australia’s first innings ended with a total of 289 runs, Shane Warne was called upon to face the experienced Mike Gatting, who was known to be a proficient player against spin bowling. Despite expectations that Gatting would dominate the inexperienced Warne, the Australian proved to be more than capable of handling his opponent.

In what would become a famous moment in the Ashes, the 23-year-old Warne took his time during his run-up and delivered a masterpiece with his wind-up motion. The leg-break pitch caused the ball to drift to the right in the air before pitching several inches outside the line of the leg stump.

Gatting, a skilled spin-bowler, watched the ball’s trajectory and swiftly extended his leg to intercept it in an effort to neutralise any possible danger. To everyone’s surprise, including Gatting’s, the ball suddenly swung outside the leg before rapidly spinning back in and travelling about 2.5 feet before just missing the top of the off-stump and beating the batter.

Gatting was left astonished and perplexed by Shane Warne’s incredible delivery, which was subsequently dubbed the “ball of the century” due to its sheer unbelievability. Despite his experience as a seasoned bowler, Gatting was unable to anticipate the ball’s sudden turn and bounce, which left both him and the crowd in awe.
