Cricket Viral Video: In 1999, Sunil Joshi’s remarkable bowling performance, with figures of 5-6, dismantled South Africa at the Nairobi Gymkhana Club Ground. The 1990s were a high point for ODIs, featuring triangular and occasional quadrangular tournaments. The LG Cup in 1999, held in Kenya, involved India, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Sunil Joshi, the unsung hero

Zimbabwe clinched the tournament opener against Kenya with a victory margin of four balls and three wickets in hand. In the second match, Hansie Cronje won the toss and chose to bat. Earlier in the year, South Africa had defeated India in a World Cup match at Hove, leading to the removal of Mohammad Azharuddin as captain. In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble, Ajay Jadeja took charge of leading the Indian team in the LG Cup.

After Venkatesh Prasad and Debasis Mohanty completed their spells with the new ball, Ajay Jadeja introduced Sunil Joshi into the attack. In the 10th over, Herschelle Gibbs mistimed a steer, leading to a brilliant catch by Rahul Dravid at slip. Meanwhile, at the other end, Nikhil Chopra maintained the pressure. Boeta Dippenaar, Gibbs’ opening partner, attempted a slog sweep off Joshi and was bowled.

Hansie Cronje was the next to depart, caught by S Ramesh off both the bat and pad. Jonty Rhodes attempted a forceful reverse slog-sweep, but the ball ballooned to Nikhil Chopra at short third. Sunil Joshi then managed to induce an edge from Shaun Pollock just two balls later, and Rahul Dravid‘s slip catch secured Joshi a five-wicket haul.

With the score at 85-7, South Africa faced the possibility of being bowled out for less than a hundred, but Jacques Kallis’s contribution of 38 runs helped them reach a total of 117. Sunil Joshi concluded with remarkable figures of 10-6-6-5, while Nikhil Chopra chipped in with 3-26. India, after a 72-run opening partnership between S Ramesh and Sourav Ganguly, comfortably secured the victory in under 23 overs.
