At the start, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar delivered a powerful performance, both scoring centuries, while Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, two other senior members of the team, achieved the fifties. However, despite their strong start, India’s middle order faced a collapse that put them at risk of giving up a lead. Nevertheless, Tendulkar persevered, and with the help of Harbhajan Singh (who scored 63), the two formed a 129-run partnership for the 8th wicket in a brief period, allowing India to finish with a total score of 532/10.

Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan were playing well together and had scored 100 runs while batting at the 8th wicket. Harbhajan hit a good shot off Brett Lee’s delivery and patted him on the back, but then Andrew Symonds said something unpleasant on the microphone. Harbhajan replied, and this led to a big argument between the players. The umpire Mark Benson got involved and Harbhajan was accused of making a racist comment towards Symonds, calling him a “monkey.”

At the end of Day 3, Harbhajan was charged with a Level 3 offence following a complaint by Australian captain Ricky Ponting. Although the hearing was initially slated for the end of Day 4, it was ultimately postponed until the end of the Test. In the meantime, Australia scored 401/7 in their second innings and dismissed India for 210, claiming a 2-0 series lead. Umpire Steve Bucknor’s poor decisions also aided Australia’s cause.

Emotions ran high in both dressing rooms following the contentious Sydney Test. Attention quickly turned to Harbhajan’s hearing, which resulted in the spinner receiving a three-Test ban for making racist comments about Symonds. The Indian management was unhappy with the decision, as there was no evidence to support the claim that Harbhajan had used any racist language.
