Cristiano Ronaldo: In order to secure Europa League participation and set up a battle for first place with Real Sociedad the next week, Cristiano Ronaldo scored once more as Manchester United defeated Sheriff. Erik ten Hag's team won four straight games after dropping their Group E opener at home to the Spanish team to secure a top-two finish with one game remaining.

Headers by Diogo Dalot and substitute Marcus Rashford set United on track for that latest Europa League success, and a return to form Ronaldo sealed a 3-0 victory to the pleasure of the Old Trafford crowd.

After Rashford had added to Dalot's first-half goal and Ronaldo had been cautioned for kicking the ball away, the latter eventually scored his 701st club goal in the 81st minute.

With this victory, a crucial matchup against Real Sociedad in Spain is scheduled for next Thursday, when United will try to unseat them in Group E. If United is unsuccessful in that endeavour, they will have to play in a play-off against one of the third-placed clubs from the Champions League group stage in the knockout round.

After Manuel Lanzini's penalty gave West Ham a 1-0 victory over Silkeborg in the Europa Conference League, West Ham breezed into the round of 16.

The Hammers just needed a point to be certain of leading Group B and avoiding a two-legged play-off in February since they were already secured a spot in the knockout rounds. But with a seventh victory overall in their seven games, they kept their unblemished record in Europe this season. To put it mildly, Michail Antonio was unnecessarily clipped by Silkeborg goalie Nicolai Larsen, leading to the penalty.

But nobody who supported the claret and blue was unhappy, least of all manager David Moyes, who can now lay the league to rest until March and focus on moving up the Premier League.
