Dilip Vengsarkar Reveals The Reason Behind MS Dhoni Appointment As Captain

MS DHONI
Dilip Vengsarkar revealed in a latest interview with Hindustan Times as to what circumstances lead to the appointment of Dhoni as Captain.

MS Dhoni: Former Indian team captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar revealed why Dhoni was appointed as the team India’s captain in all three formats. The reason might not be as shocking, but it is surely delightful.

Dhoni became the captain of the Blues directly for the T20 World Cup 2007. He had no other experience in leading the Indian team. And his first match against Scotland was washed out, so the first official match in which Dhoni captained Team India was against Pakistan. It was as big as it could get.

The Leadership Of MS Dhoni

Dhoni was the White ball captain of India for the T20 World Cup 2007. After Dravid decided not to take part in the competition, Sachin and Ganguly also opted out of it. Dhoni was the senior member of the team alongside Sehwag, Yuvraj, and Harbhajan.

With a young team at their departure, BCCI decided to give the command to MS Dhoni. Dhoni answered all the questions and critics with an emphatic win in the tournament and then a win against Australia.

After that, it was decided that Dhoni will lead India in the white ball tournament for a while. The question was of the red ball format as the selectors were still keen on Dravid as their choice.

The Test

Rahul Dravid lost the faith of the fans after their World Cup exit and his days were numbered. But he proved his worth after leading India towards a 1-0 win over England in test. That series win was a statement that he was capable and World Cup exit was nothing but a mere fluke.

The crisis accused when Dravid resign from the test captaincy of India while T20 tournament was still going on. Vengsarkar went to Sachin, but he also declined and suggested Dhoni as the choice for captain.

“Apart from being an automatic choice in the team, you look at the player’s cricketing acumen, body language, ability to lead from the front and man management skills. We saw Dhoni’s approach to the game, body language, how he spoke to others; we got positive feedback,” Vengsarkar was quoted saying it in Hindustan Times.
