Djokovic: After defeating Marton Fucsovics of Hungary, ranked 83rd in the world, in straight sets on Wednesday, world No. 2 Novak Djokovic advanced to Round 3 of the French Open 2023. After surviving a scare in the first set against his 31-year-old opponent, the third seed played his best during the night session at the Philippe Chatrier.

Djokovic Claims Hard-Fought Opening Set Victory

The opening set, which required one hour and thirty minutes to complete, was won by Djokovic. The 22-time Grand Slam champion from Serbia appeared unsteady as veteran clay-court player Fucsovics gave it his all to challenge him. But Djokovic improved in the first set tiebreaker before destroying his rival in the second. In the third set, Djokovic and Fuscovics traded breaks, but the Serb showed his class to win the men's singles second-round match 7-6 (2), 6-0, 6-3 in 2 hours and 44 minutes.

Djokovic's Clash with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Third Round

In the third round of the Paris tournament, Djokovic will play young Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 23. Notably, Djokovic has advanced to the third round at Roland Garros, which he has won twice, for the 18th time in a row. Both Djokovic and Fucsovics had 28 winners, but the Serb was in the lead thanks to a higher first-serve percentage (62%) than his opponent (53). In the second and third sets, Djokovic relentlessly pressed Fucsovics and earned 8 of his 12 break point chances. It was the ideal encounter for Djokovic to warm up for greater fights he would be facing later on. In the top half of the draw, where Djokovic may face 13th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round, there are also World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Overcoming Taro Daniel to Secure Victory

On Wednesday, Alcaraz required four sets to defeat Japan's Taro Daniel, the world's No. 112 player. Additionally, Djokovic refrained from making any political statements on the court after sparking controversy with his comment on Kosovo following his first-round victory in Paris. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) ruled on Wednesday that Djokovic's declaration that "Kosovo is the heart of Serbia" was captured on video at Roland Garros did not break any regulations because political statements are not prohibited by Grand Slam rules. After winning the first round on Monday, the two-time champion scrawled the message on a camera lens. That same day, 30 NATO peacekeepers were harmed during skirmishes with Serb demonstrators in Zvecan, Kosovo, the town where Djokovic's father was up.
