He started the event strong with an opening throw of 88.40 metres. His second attempt was a foul. But he came back strong in the third round with a record-breaking throw. It broke his own national record and placed him 24th on the all-time list of javelin throwers who have crossed 90 metres.
He followed it with a throw of 80.56m, another foul, and finished with 88.20m in his final round. But the 90.23m throw stood out and pushed him into the global elite.
Germany’s Julian Weber won the event with a 91.06m throw. Grenada’s Anderson Peters came third. India’s Kishore Jena placed eighth.
Neeraj Chopra’s journey began with gold at the South Asian Games and the World U20 Championships in 2016. He continued to rise with medals at the 2017 Asian Championships and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where he became the first Indian javelin thrower to win gold.
His biggest moment came at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. His 87.58m throw won India its first Olympic gold in athletics. Since then, Neeraj has become a national icon.
After his latest achievement at Doha, Neeraj now ranks higher than stars like Max Dehning (90.20m) and Keshorn Walcott (90.16m). He trains under Czech legend Jan Zelezny, who holds the world record of 98.48m.
