FIFA World Cup 2022

FIFA World Cup 2022: On Saturday, Argentina defeated Australia 2-1 to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals, where they will face the Netherlands, who earlier defeated the United States with ease. This is also Lionel Messi’s first goal in the tournament’s knockout stages.

Messi was playing his career’s 1000th game

At Doha’s Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, the Argentina captain scored his 789th goal and marked his 1,000th career appearance. It was a graceful finish from a man making his sixth World Cup appearance, but who had never scored in a knockout game at the competition he is trying to win for the first time at the age of 35.

Just before the hour mark, Julian Alvarez doubled Argentina’s lead by taking advantage of a goalkeeper blunder, giving the game the idea that Argentina would win easily. The Australian squad, though, went down fighting despite having already defied all predictions by making it to the round of 16, even in Qatar.

Only a last-ditch effort from Lisandro Martinez stopped Aziz Behich of Scotland’s Dundee United from scoring a spectacular late goal after a Craig Goodwin shot bounced in off Enzo Fernandez for an own goal.

Messi told Argentine television, “It was a really physical game but I am very happy with the victory and that we have taken another little step forward.”
