FIFA World Cup 2022: US Journalist who was detained for supporting LGBTQ in Qatar, mysteriously dies at the age of 48

FIFA World Cup 2022: According to his brother, US journalist Grant Wahl passed away while covering the FIFA World Cup. Wahl was earlier detained in Qatar for supporting the LGBTQ community by wearing a rainbow shirt.

The 48-year-old Grant passed out on Friday at the Lusail Iconic Stadium while reporting the Argentina vs. Netherlands quarterfinal game. Grant’s brother, Eric, claimed that the Qatari government may have had anything to do with the former Sports Illustrated journalist’s passing.

Grant Wahl posts a video

In a video posted on Twitter, he said “My name is Eric Wahl. I live in Seattle, Washington. I am Grant Wahl’s brother. I’m gay, I’m the reason he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he received death threats. I do not believe my brother just died. I believe he was killed. And I just beg for any help.”

Grant claimed that he was asked to remove his rainbow shirt by World Cup security before the United States’ opening match against Wales at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan. When he tweeted about the incident, he claimed that his phone had been taken away.

He continued by saying that a security guard at the location afterwards apologised to him and let him into the stadium. Additionally, he said that a FIFA representative had apologised to him.

Grant Wahl’s reason of death remains a mystery

It’s still unclear whether Grant passed away in the hospital or in transit. “We’re still trying to find out,” Eric said. “He collapsed at the stadium, was given cpr, was taken by Uber to hospital and died according to Celine. We just spoke with the state department and Celine has spoken to Ron Klain and the White House.”

The US Soccer organisation released a statement in which it expressed its “heartbreak” at learning of Grant’s passing and stated that he will continue to be “an inspiration to all.”
