Lalit Modi on Shashi Tharoor: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is at the center of a controversy following a viral podcast featuring former IPL chairman Lalit Modi. A 4-minute-47-second clip from the podcast, shared by BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya on his social media account, has sparked intense debate. The video reveals allegations of political pressure, questionable agreements, and corruption involving cricket and politics.
From accusations of Tharoor threatening Modi with Income Tax and ED raids to pressure from top Congress leaders, here’s what Lalit Modi disclosed in podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani.
Lalit Modi on Sunanda Pushkar's Role in the Kochi IPL Deal
In the podcast, Lalit Modi alleged that Shashi Tharoor coerced him into approving a deal for the Kochi IPL franchise, which disproportionately benefitted Sunanda Pushkar. Modi explained:
- Pushkar, introduced as a “marketing genius,” was listed as a shareholder in the consortium.
- Despite investing $0, Pushkar was granted 25% ownership of the Kochi IPL team, worth $300 million.
- She also received 15% of all revenue, raising further questions about her role in the team’s formation.
Modi recalled probing the shareholders during a meeting:
"I asked the shareholders one by one about their credentials. Everyone answered except Sunanda Pushkar. She wasn’t even present. I was told she contributed nothing but still owned 25% of the team and 15% of its revenue. This made no sense to me."
Lalit Modi further revealed that Pushkar’s involvement was introduced by a shareholder’s father, prompting him to question why such a lucrative stake was being handed to her.
Lalit Modi on Shashi Tharoor: Alleged Threats and Coercion
Modi claimed that his questioning about Sunanda Pushkar’s role led to a threatening phone call from Shashi Tharoor. According to Modi:
"Tharoor called me and said, ‘How dare you ask about Sunanda Pushkar? If you continue, you’ll face ED raids tomorrow, and Income Tax will jail you.’ I told him I wouldn’t be intimidated and refused to sign the agreement."
Despite Modi’s objections, he stated that political pressure escalated. He said that Shashank Manohar, the then-BCCI president, contacted him and urged him to sign the agreement immediately.
Political Pressure and 10 Janpath’s Alleged Involvement
In the podcast, Lalit Modi shared how political influence played a critical role in the deal. He alleged that Manohar cited pressure from Congress leaders:
"Shashank Manohar told me, ‘I’ve received calls from 10 Janpath. You must sign the agreement tonight.’ I resisted and proposed a meeting the next day, but he insisted, threatening consequences if I didn’t comply."
Shocking Revelations About Tharoor and Pushkar
The morning after signing the agreement, Modi discovered through newspapers that Sunanda Pushkar and Shashi Tharoor were getting married. This revelation, Modi claimed, explained the undue pressure he faced:
"With one signature, Sunanda Pushkar became the owner of a $300 million asset. She went from rags to riches overnight. It was clear why so much pressure was applied to finalize the deal."
Podcast Sparks Debate
Lalit Modi’s revelations in the podcast have brought the focus back on alleged corruption in Indian cricket. His claims about Shashi Tharoor, Sunanda Pushkar, and political interference have fueled intense discussions on social media.
