Graham Reid: After worst-ever performance by host nation in WC, Indian Men’s Hockey team coach RESIGNS

Graham Reid, who had led the Indian men’s hockey team to a record bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, announced his resignation from his position on Monday.

His resignation was announced following India’s dismal performance at the 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, which concluded on Sunday. At the prestigious competition held in Odisha, India and Argentina placed joint-ninth out of 16 teams. It was the lowest place a host nation has ever achieved in the competition’s history.

It has been an honour: Graham Reid

Talking to media, he said, “It is now time for me to step aside and hand over the reigns to the next management.” He continued further by saying, “It has been an honour and privilege to work with the team and Hockey India and I have enjoyed every moment of this epic journey. I wish the team all the very best.”

Following their 0-0 tie with England, India was forced to face New Zealand in a crossover match, which they ultimately lost in shootouts after blowing a two-goal lead. Their successive victories, 8-0 over Japan and 5-2 over South Africa, were only sufficient to prevent them from suffering their worst-ever World Cup result.

Reid’s remarkable career as coach

Reid’s tenure as India’s coach has been largely successful. Along with winning a medal at the 2021 Olympics, he also guided the men in blue to third place in the 2021–2022 FIH Hockey Pro League season and victory in the 2019 FIH Series final.

Reid submitted his resignation along with those of his assisting employees, including Mitchell David Pemberton, the Scientific Advisor, and Analytical Coach Greg Clark, both of whom will go on leave in January.
