Hayden’s Candid Critique! India’s ICC Title Drought Analysed ahead of WTC Final, Sheds Light on IPL Sensation

Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden: All roads lead to The Oval as Rohit Sharma’s home after the 16th Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The Ultimate Test will mark Team India’s return to international cricket. Rohit’s Team India, the newly ranked No. 1 team in red-ball cricket, will play Pat Cummins’ Australia in this week’s ICC World Test Championship final at the Oval. Team India, who finished second in the previous ICC World Test Championship, would be eager to overcome their lengthy title drought in ICC competitions.

MS Dhoni’s Leadership in the 2013 Champions Trophy Victory

The famous MS Dhoni was in charge when the two-time world winners last took home an ICC trophy. Back in 2013, the former India captain led the Men in Blue to Champions Trophy victory. The Asian juggernauts haven’t won a single trophy in ICC competitions since then. Atrocious opponent Pakistan outplayed India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final. After that, New Zealand shocked the Men in Blue in the 2019 ODI World Cup semifinal. India was defeated by eventual champions England in the semifinals of the previous T20 World Cup.

Analyzing India’s Obstacles in Overcoming ICC Competitions

What prevents India from overcoming the last obstacle in ICC competitions? Can Team India upset Australia and win a significant ICC title this year? The team’s dismal streak in ICC competitions, according to legendary Australian opener Matthew Hayden, is more of a “mindset” issue. “There is no doubt that it is not a skill issue. Therefore, it must be a matter of the opportunity and the initial perspective. In fact, cricket is the only sport that exists in this region and is the sport’s foundation. In Australia, even with this ugly beard and hat on, I could go down the street and largely go unnoticed (laughs). But alongside cricket, it also has fantastic competitive sports.  Rugby, football, our watersports, surfing, outdoor sports, here in India it’s very insular and there’s a lot of pressure,” Hayden told PTI.

The Venue and Dates for the World Test Championship Final at the Oval

The final is set to take place at the Oval in London from June 7 to June 11, and the illustrious Australian opener thinks neither team has an advantage going into it. Hayden also had some fascinating advice for Rohit’s Team India ahead of the World Test Championship final, citing the recent success of IPL heavyweights Gujarat Titans (GT), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).The same applies to Pakistani cricket. There is just one sport, and that is cricket, so it has to do with thinking. When you look at franchise setups, Gujarat Titans and CSK have done really well this year, but you should be cautious about looking for the scoreboard and looking for the titles and just participating and being a part of the process. Indians from Mumbai also adhere to a particular process. Therefore, I would advise Indian cricket to ignore results and invest on the process instead, Hayden added.

Hayden’s Pronouncement on Shubman Gill’s Rise in Indian Cricket

The former CSK star also made an important pronouncement regarding Shubman Gill’s ascent. Gill, the starting centre for India, has come in London following a memorable IPL 2023 season. The IPL’s Player of the Tournament and Orange Cap winner has also contributed a number of brilliant innings for Team India to solidify his place in the Indian squad across all forms. For the following 15 years, Shubman Gill will be prominently featured. A strong Test cricketer is built on rather straightforward principles. Additionally, Shubman, like KL Rahul before him, plays fantastically overall. He will so continue to be a legend in all forms of cricket for a very long time. One of Shubman’s greatest assets is that he is excellent off the backfoot, which he demonstrated when on tour in Australia. Therefore, square of wicket play is superb. And that’ll put him in good stead even when facing the world’s finest Test teams, Hayden continued.
