ICC ODI World Cup: On June 22, 2019, during the ICC ODI World Cup in England, Mohammed Shami made history by becoming the second Indian bowler, following Chetan Sharma, to achieve a hat-trick in the tournament. This remarkable feat by the right-arm pacer played a crucial role in preventing a potential upset, as Afghanistan came close to successfully chasing down India's target.

Mohammed Shami's final over hattrick

Despite their impressive batting performances against formidable opponents like Pakistan and Australia earlier in the tournament, Team India encountered difficulties when they chose to bat first in Southampton. The Indian team managed to score only 224/8 in their innings, and at one point, the Gulbadin Naib-led Afghanistan side was in a comfortable position at 106/2.

As India made a comeback with crucial wickets, Afghanistan remained in contention with just 16 runs needed from the last over, and the well-established Mohammad Nabi still present at the crease. The responsibility of delivering the final over fell to Mohammed Shami, following Jasprit Bumrah's remarkable performance in the penultimate over, where he conceded only five runs.

The last over commenced with a boundary, but Mohammed Shami quickly bounced back by taking the crucial wicket of Mohammad Nabi on the third delivery, bringing India closer to victory. Shami executed a full and straight delivery, aimed at the stumps, and also dismissed Aftab Alam and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman on successive deliveries, achieving a memorable hat-trick.
