ICC to decide fate of T20 World Cup 2021 venue on June 1

Amid the second wave of COVID surge, India is still in the hopes of hosting the World T20I later this year. But the BCCI’s dream seems to be dwindling considering the talks of the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The second wave of COVID surge in India has devastated all the medical lifelines and more than 4,000 peoples are losing their lives every day. It also led to the suspension of the fourteenth season of the Indian Premier League and with the virus breaching the bio-bubble.

Keeping all the factors in mind, the International Cricket Council is set to take a call on the T20 World Cup’s fate on June 1.

Health authorities, governments, hospitals, etc. have already been asked to amp up their preparation for the scenario by experts. Amid such uncertainty, organising the 16-team T20 World Cup in the country does look like a huge risk.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also scheduled a Special General Meeting (SGM) on May 29 to discuss the matter.

“The case numbers are dropping and we do not think that it will take a U-turn again, and this is after we are testing everyone we can. But we are preparing ourselves for the third wave, if any, by having more jumbo field hospitals,” Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Chahal had said of the Covid situation in India and the possible third wave.

A Cricbuzz source, however, maintains that it is too early to decide the fate of the tournament which is scheduled to begin mid-October.

“The ICC is not unaware of the situation but one cannot speculate on what will be the decision on June 1. One has to wait and see,” the source said.
