Jadeja fined 25% of match fees

The infraction occurred on Thursday, 9 February, during the 46th over of Australia’s first innings, when he used pain-relieving ointment on his index finger without seeking permission from the on-field umpires. In addition to a fine equivalent to 25% of his match fee, Jadeja was also awarded one demerit point, as it was his first offense in a 24-month period. Jadeja acknowledged the offense and accepted the punishment proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

When determining the sanctions against Jadeja, the Match Referee was satisfied that the ointment was used solely for medical purposes and did not change the condition of the ball, which would have been in violation of clause 41.3 of the ICC playing conditions for Unfair Play – The Match Ball – Changing its Condition.
