India and Australia players unite in tough time

The players are donning the armbands as a heartfelt tribute to the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred in Balasore, Odisha, on Friday. The collision between the Coromandel Express and a stationary iron ore-laden goods train at Bahanaga Bazar station, just before 7 pm, resulted in the devastating loss of over 280 lives and left more than 1000 people injured. Making it worse, some of the derailed coaches subsequently collided with the Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, marking India’s most catastrophic railway disaster in the past 20 years.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field first. Following the toss, both teams took to the field wearing black armbands as a mark of respect. In a gloomy moment, the PA system announced a minute’s silence to honour the victims of a devastating triple train accident in Balasore, which occurred just last Friday.

In a statement BCCI had stated, “The Indian Cricket Team will observe a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the Odisha train tragedy ahead of the start of play on Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship final at The Oval. The team mourns the deaths and offers its deepest condolences to the families and friends of all those who tragically lost their lives. To express solidarity with those affected, Team India will wear black armbands.”
