Sunil Gavaskar stated that it is not fair to Pujara to make him the scapegoat and was also angry over Sarfaraz exclusion for Ind vs WI 2023.
Ind vs WI 2023: Sunil Gavaskar has been furious over Indian Cricket Team since the ICC World Test Championship 2023 final. But now it looks like even the selection committee has tested his patience, and he is not able to handle more.
In an interview with India Today, Sunil Gavaskar stated that it is not fair to Pujara to make him the scapegoat. When the whole batting lineup flopped, how can you blame one batsman? On the other hand, he also slammed the selection committee for not picking Sarfaraz Khan for Ind Vs WI 2023 even after his amazing performances in the Ranji trophy.
Stop Playing Ranji Trophy
The former World Cup winner stated that there is no need to play Ranji Trophy if the selections are like this. After all his performances, he insisted on Sarfaraz being part of the national side. Gavaskar was furious that even after such amazing performances, the selectors ignored Sarfaraz for the upcoming West Indies tour.
“Sarfaraz Khan has been scoring at an average of 100 in all past three seasons. What does he have to do to be picked in the squad? He might not be in the XI, but you pick him in the team." The former Indian skipper stated.
Sarfaraz has scored 556 runs in this Ranji season with an average of 92.66. Whereas last year he amassed 982 runs at an average of 122.75. Sarfaraz has scored 3505 runs at an average of 79.67 in his first-class career.
"Tell him that his performances are being recognized. Otherwise, stop playing Ranji Trophy. Say, it’s of no use, you just play IPL and think you are good enough for the red ball game as well.”
Pujara Unfairly Treated
Gavaskar was also sad over the treatment that Pujara was garnering. He stated why he was the only one who dropped when the whole batting lineup collapsed. Gavaskar further stated that Pujara had been a loyal Indian cricketer and does not deserve to be treated this way.
"But because he does not have millions of followers on platforms who will make a noise in case he gets dropped, you drop him. That is something beyond understanding. What is the criteria of dropping him and keeping the others who failed?"
