India at Olympics: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver, India’s 1st Medal At Tokyo

Mirabai Chanu has given India its first medal on the second day of the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai Chanu won this silver medal in the 49 kg women’s weightlifting category. Mirabai confirmed the medal by lifting a total of 202 kg in the snatch and clean and jerk rounds. After winning the silver medal of Mirabai Chanu, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have congratulated her.

President Ram Nath Kovind tweets “Heartiest congratulations to Mirabai Chanu for starting the medal tally for India in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by winning silver medal in weightlifting.”

Mirabai secured the second position in the 49kg category. The gold of this event has been won by Jihoi Hou of China.

Mirabai is the second woman from India to win a medal in weightlifting. Earlier, Karnam Malleswari had won a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In the second attempt, Mirabai Chanu was successful in lifting 115 kg. However, she failed in the third attempt and won the silver medal.
