IPL 2023: Board issues stricter guidelines ! Mandatory 7-day isolation for COVID-19 positive cases, details here

IPL 2023

IPL 2023: Although the world may seem to have moved past the Covid-19 pandemic, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not. Even though ICC regulations now permit players who test positive for Covid-19 to play in a match, the BCCI has stated that a minimum 7-day isolation period will still be mandatory, following the same policy as the previous two seasons.

What are the new IPL 2023 Covid rules?

For this season of IPL, the bio-secure bubble will no longer be mandatory as it was in the last three years since the pandemic. However, the tournament organizers have stated that they want to remain cautious. They have mandated that players who test positive for COVID-19 will not be allowed to train or play in any matches until they produce a negative test result. The earliest that a negative test can be mandated is on the fifth day of recovery.

A BCCI official stated, “While there has been a decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in India we still have to be careful of the emerging strains which are becoming a concern at regular intervals. Positive cases must be isolated for a maximum of seven days. Positive cases will not be allowed to participate in any match or any form of activity/event during the period of isolation.”

The IPL has stated that they will only test players who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19, not those who are asymptomatic. If a player tests positive for COVID-19, they will not be allowed to train or participate in matches until they provide a negative test result. Even if the player tests negative on the seventh day, they will still need to produce two negative COVID-19 test results, 12 hours apart, before being allowed to rejoin the team.

Relaxation in intl’ matches

Cricket is gradually relaxing its restrictions related to COVID-19, including in international cricket. The relaxation was evident when Tahlia McGrath, an Australian all-rounder, became the first player ever to play a cricket match even after testing positive for the virus. She had participated in Australia’s Commonwealth Games 2022 cricket tournament final against India, which her team eventually won.
