IPL 2023: The Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be led by Australian cricketer David Warner. While the official announcement is still awaited, the team management has reportedly deemed Warner the best choice to lead the team in the absence of their regular captain, Rishabh Pant, who was injured in a car accident last year and will not be able to participate in most of the cricket action this year.
Warner appointed as Delhi Capitals captain for IPL 2023
Warner has considerable experience in leadership roles, having previously led the Sunrisers Hyderabad to an IPL title in 2016. In that season’s final, his team defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs in a thrilling match. Warner is one of the veterans of the IPL and is among the all-time leading run scorers in the tournament’s history. In 162 IPL matches, the left-handed batsman has amassed 5881 runs at an average of 42.01 and a strike rate of 140.69. He has also scored a record 55 half-centuries and four hundreds in the competition.

Additionally, the Delhi Capitals have a quality all-rounder in Axar Patel, who has stepped up his game in recent years. In his IPL career, Patel has scored 1135 runs from 122 matches at an average of 19.24, but he has been useful with a strike rate of 128.83, batting lower down the order. He has also been a handy bowler, having taken over 101 wickets at an economy of 7.25.

In other news, on Thursday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad appointed Aiden Markram as their captain. The franchise had let go of Warner after IPL 2021 and had given Kane Williamson a chance to lead last year. However, they chose to let go of Williamson before the Players Auction and have now entrusted the leadership responsibility to South African cricketer Markram in the new-look squad.
