IPL 2024: Yesterday was a tough match for CSK with bat. None of the batsmen except Ruturaj Gaikwad were able to perform against the disciplined bowling of Punjab Kings. While other batsmen were not even able to register a decent score, Sam Curran devised a brilliant plan to keep MS Dhoni on bay.
Dhoni has been having a brilliant season as a finisher. He was dismissed for the first time this IPL yesterday in 8 innings. He has scored 110 runs with a Strike Rate of 230 including 9 sixes so far.
But after Wednesday, it looks like the IPL teams might have finally found the chink in his armor. A brilliant plan by PBKS skipper Sam Curran kept Dhoni at bay completely for the 19th over.
IPL 2024: The Spin Treatment
Every logical cricket fan will tell you to bowl a pacer in the 19th over. But Punjab's skipper thought differently and called Rahul Chahar to bowl the 19th over. It was the first time in his career that Rahul would bowl the 19th over and that too in front of Dhoni.
One of the most feared finishers and the trick worked wonderfully. Chahar was disciplined and only allowed 3 runs to be scored against him. He also got rid of Moeen Ali who can be a pinch hitter himself.
This is not the first time that a spinner has got better than Dhoni in IPL. Dhoni has the lowest strike rate against spin bowling in IPL. Another thing to notice is that there are 3 CSK players on that list. Other teams might look to exploit that as the IPL 2024 group stages are in the final phase now. The list also includes the name of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.
Irfan Pathan Criticizes Dhoni
In the 20th over of the match, Dhoni denied a very easy single to Daryl Mitchell and this act left Irfan Pathan bewildered. He criticized his former captain and had some harsh words for this action.
"He shouldn't have done that (refusing a single). This is a team game. Don't do that in a team game. The other guy [Daryl Mitchell] is also an international player. If he had been a bowler, I would have understood it for sure."
