The news of Jay Shah becoming the new ICC chairman has broken the internet as memes have started to take over.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah is all set to become the new ICC president in the upcoming days. He will replace the incumbent Greg Barclay as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Barclay told ICC directors that he won’t contest for the post further. He has been in tenure for the past two sessions and decided to take his name out after hearing that Shah will be contesting for the post.

If this happens, Shah will become only the third Indian to have this post after Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997 to 200) and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012). With the support of major boards with him, these reports are more than confirmed.

An ICC spokesperson confirmed the fact that Greg won’t stand for a third term and will step down from the post. His tenure will end in November and Shah will take the reins by December 1.

The spokesperson stated, “ICC chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022.

Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024. And if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”

Meme Riot!

As per ICC rules, the chairman’s election comprises 16 votes, and the majority of nine votes will give you a win. Shah enjoys a healthy relationship with several boards and with England and Australia supporting him, this election seems like a formality.

This news has caused a meme riot on social media and fans showed their delight over this news.
