Lionel Messi: As La Albiceleste overcame France in the World Cup final on Sunday, Lionel Messi led Argentina to their first victory in 36 years. While breaking numerous records and scoring twice in the championship, Messi ultimately lost out on the Golden Boot to Kylian Mbappe, whose hat-trick nearly derailed Argentina's celebration in Qatar.

Messi hug mother, spends time with family

Messi once again played a crucial role for his country throughout the competition. He finally got hands on the prize that had eluded him for so long throughout his stellar career while competing in his final World Cup.

After Argentina's victory, a touching exchange between Messi and his mother Celia Maria Cuccittini was caught on camera. He was seen hugging his mother post the ceremony of handling the world cup. He was also seen spending time with his family later which included his wife and three children.

Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick guaranteed that the game ended equal at 3-3 after extra time, and Argentina won the shootout 4-2 to avenge their earlier loss.

France lost the World Cup final on penalties for the second time in five tournaments after falling to Italy in 2006. By imitating the legendary Diego Maradona, Messi was able to round off his illustrious career at age 35 thanks to the victory. Argentina's previous World Cup victory, which happened in 1986, was greatly influenced by Maradona.
