Moroccan fans go beserk, clash with Belgian Police, following teams defeat to France

FIFA World Cup 2022: Following their team’s 0-2 semifinal loss to France on Wednesday, Moroccan supporters and police engaged in physical altercation in Brussels. In videos going viral in Social Media, football fans can be seen clashing in the streets of Belgium and France, after France advanced into the FIFA World Cup Final. Around 5.5 million Moroccans make up the largest immigrant diaspora in Europe and nevertheless have close ties to their nation of origin. Morocco was riding a tremendous groundswell of support from the Arab World going into the Semifinal. Their fans are expressing their rage because of how emotionally upsetting their performance on the football field has been in the World Cup Semi Final.

Moroccan fans clash with Belgian Police, following their team’s loss against France

Near Brussels South station, about 100 supporters wearing Moroccan flags tossed fireworks and other objects towards riot-clad police. Police reacted with water cannon and tear gas as fans set fire to trash bags and cardboard boxes.

The skirmishes were brief and didn’t result in any major damage, according to the police who detained a number of fans.

France becomes second team after Brazil to advance to second straight World Cup Final

Since Brazil in 2002, France is the first team to advance to a second straight World Cup final. After Kylian Mbappe, who is tied for the tournament lead in goals with Hernandez, had his shot blocked, The Hernandez gave France the early lead with a close-range strike in the fifth minute.

Jawad El Yamiq’s shot off the post cost France the chance to double their lead. When Randal Kolo Muani scored his first goal for his country in the 79th minute, Didier Deschamps’ team finally put Morocco to sleep and advanced to the final, where France will face Argentina on December 18.

Morocco’s coach, Regragui, claimed after the game that his team gave everything they had, and that the team’s exploits during the 2022 campaign in Qatar could not be diminished by the semi-final loss.
