WTC Finals 2023: Pakistan is in a terrible situation. It's true that Babar Azam's team's chances of making it to the World Test Championship final are now in jeopardy. A little more than a week ago, Pakistan was in charge of its destiny. The Asian juggernauts had a good chance of securing one of the two spots available for the World Test Final final because they had five home Test matches coming up, even though they were against difficult opponents like England and New Zealand. However, Pakistan has not only given up a home series but also ensured that their future is no longer in their own hands after narrowly losing the Multan Test against England after already making a mistake in the first Test at Rawalpindi.
After the defeat, Pakistan dropped to sixth place in the WTC standings. With two matches remaining—one against England and one against New Zealand—Babar Azam's team knows they must not only win those matches, but also hope other outcomes go their way. One of them would be for India to lose both of their Test matches against Bangladesh, which seems somewhat unlikely given the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rohit Sharma for the first Test.
India can now advance to the final thanks to the outcome in Multan, even if they drop one of the four Tests against Australia at home. However, Rohit Sharma's team must first shut out Bangladesh in the two upcoming games in order to maintain that optimism by the time they host the Baggygreens in February.
The series between Australia and South Africa will be yet another crucial one in this whole thing. India would like to move up to second place and would like to see the Proteas get destroyed by the Australians at home. In the next two months, there will be many different combinations and permutations, which will make Test cricket even more fascinating for purists.
