Lionel Messi: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are arguably the two best players in footballing history. Both of them have achieved so much that half the players can’t even imagine.
Their rivalry was the golden period of football and these two ruled over the footballing world for 15 long years. It pushed both of them to compete with each other and become better versions of themselves.
But, after the Balon D’or nominations were revealed on Wednesday, it was evident that the rivalry is over now. While Lionel Messi is a favorite to win the award because of his FIFA World Cup triumph, Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t even make it in the top 30. And the Portuguese himself admitted of the rivalry being over.
“Rivalry With Lionel Messi Is Over”
According to the five-time Champions League winner, the rivalry that the duo shared for 15 long years is finally over now. “I don’t see things like that, the rivalry is gone. It was good, spectators liked it.”
He further stated that loving Cristiano Ronaldo does not mean you have to hate Messi. The Euro winner further stated that both of them have changed the history of world football and respect each other.
“We shared the stage for 15 years so the respect is there. I’m not saying that we are friends, I never chatted with him, but do I respect him.”
“The Legacy Lives On”
Even though the rivalry is over, the five-time Balon d’Or winner stated that the legacy that both of them have left will live on.
“The legacy lives on, but I don’t see the rivalry like that. We shared the stage many times, it was 15 years. I’m not saying we’re friends, I’ve never had dinner with him, but we’re professional colleagues and we respect each other.”
