Roger Binny New BCCI chief slams on sudden injuries of players; Recalls Bumrah issue keenly

Roger Binny: The new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), emphasised once more on the necessity of better pitches in India and the problem of players suffering frequent injuries. Whatever the cause of the players’ injuries, according to Binny, something needs to be done, and that will be his primary concern.

On Tuesday (October 18), the 91st Annual General Meeting of the BCCI in Mumbai elected the former World Cup-winning cricketer as its new President. It did not take him long to establish his priorities after taking on the position because he made it clear that his main concern was the issue of the team’s ongoing injuries.

India’s preparation for the current T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia has been hampered by the loss of Jasprit Bumrah, one of the senior important pacers, to a back injury earlier this month. It took Indian management a long time to choose Mohammed Shami as his successor.

At a celebration hosted by the Karnataka State Cricket Association on Thursday, Binny claimed that India cannot afford for a veteran bowler like Bumrah to go down ten days before the World Cup, forcing the management to scramble to find a substitute.

“We need to address why and how are players are getting injured so badly. We need to address why they are breaking down so easily. Not just now but also in the last four-five years. It is not that we don’t have good trainers or coaches. Whether the load is too much, whether they are playing too many formats, something needs to be done. That is my priority. You can’t have a Bumrah breaking down 10 days before the World Cup and then who is going to replace him. It is important (to address it),” Binny said on Thursday.

The former pacer himself, Binny, added that India needs improved surfaces to prevent fast bowlers’ injuries. He claimed that the present pitches are unsuitable for pacers because they are too passive. Additionally, he addressed the growing concern over new central contracts for domestic cricketers vying for spots on India’s national squad. Domestic players now don’t require central contracts since they are adequately cared for, according to Binny.
